Adapted from ‘Dekh’, Chardi Kala by Raghbir Singh Bir
- Should we pray for what we desire?
- Do we receive what we ask for — or only what we deserve?
- Why do some prayers seem to be answered, while others remain unheard?
These are questions that arise in many hearts. Raghbir Singh Bir offers insights into these very questions — that can be called the rules of the game of life, especially when it comes to our desires.
Just like the laws of physics can feel unbelievable until we experience them, the laws of the spiritual world can seem contrary to what we’ve been taught by society. But that doesn’t make them any less true. As you read on, keep an open heart. What may sound hard to believe at first might later reveal itself to be a deep truth.
Everything is here for you

Look around — this world contains everything. There is nothing that you cannot find here, and it is all for you. Whatever your heart truly desires will come to you — provided you ask for it with true, unwavering intent.
But what does it mean to ask with true intent? It means:
- Your desire is steady, strong, and uninterrupted.
- You are fully ready to receive what you ask for.
- Once you receive it, you are capable of taking care of it
Good and bad desires
There are countless things in this world — some good, some bad. Those who ask for the good receive the good. Those who ask for the bad receive the bad.
The same is true for you:
If you ask for what is good, you will receive what is good.
If you ask for what is harmful, that too will come to you.

What you have is what you once desired

Look closely — whatever you have today is the result of what you once desired.
At some point, you wished for it. And that is what you have received.
If you are sad, that sadness is because of some of your own desires. And if you are happy, that happiness is also because of your own desires.
Desires, actions and their results
Joy and sorrow are the result of our actions. And our actions come from our desires and the decisions we make.
Wrong desires → poor choices → wrong actions => pain, anxiety, hardships, illness.
Right desires → wise decisions → right actions => joy, peace, lightness, freedom.

You cannot sow cactus and expect grapes. In the same way, actions rooted in wrong intentions cannot lead to true happiness.
Why there is good and bad in the world

Good and bad things exist in this world so that you may learn to tell the difference between them. So that you let go of your desire for what is harmful, and begin to seek only what is good. And in doing so, discover lasting happiness.
If you stop desiring what is bad, you stop noticing bad around you.
You won’t need to resist or fight it — it will simply not appear in your world.
Desire: Your Enemy Or Friend?
Your desire itself can be our enemy — and your desire can also be our friend.
Bad desires are the cause of our sorrows. Good desires are the source of our joy.
Bad desires come from wrong decisions. Good desires arise from wise and thoughtful choices.

That’s why it’s so important to make the right decisions — decisions that are in harmony with the laws of the universe. This is essential for your well-being, your peace, and your happiness.
Good decisions come from wisdom

Good decisions come from knowledge and wisdom. Bad ones come from ignorance.
To be truly happy, it is important to understand the truth. And the understanding of truth begins with understanding the self — knowing who you really are, and what your relationship is with the One who created this world.
When that understanding arises, you will no longer desire what is untrue.
When It All Comes Together
When there is no desire for anything bad left in your heart, then nothing bad will be able to come near you.
Your intentions will always be good — and because of that, you will find joy and happiness all around you. You will see only goodness wherever you look.

Such a life is the very life that even the mightiest of kings longed for.
